Taxation Returns and Payments

The Australian tax system consists of a mix of direct and indirect taxes levied at both the national (Federal or Commonwealth) government level and state level. Some local government taxes may also apply.

Taxation is based on a self-assessment model and individuals and companies are required to lodge an annual Income Tax Return for each financial year.   The ATO may undertake audits of tax returns. Other tax obligations and requirements may also apply such as GST and PAYG.

  • Withholding taxes are withheld by the employer or payer and are payable to the ATO on a number of payment types and situations. This includes dividends, interest or royalties which are paid to a foreign entity.
  • Pay-as-you-go (PAYG) regulations apply in a number of situations including the withholding of employee salary or wages representing the employee's income tax payable which must be remitted to the ATO on their behalf.

Whilst most taxes are managed by a national/federal level via the ATO, there is one tax that is levied at a state-based level: State Payroll Tax.

Beachhead undertakes all relevant tax requirements, returns and payments including GST, Income tax and state taxes, Company Tax Returns and Management Accounts

Business Banking Facilities

The Australian banking system is highly developed, well-capitalised and amongst the most highly rated in the world. There are four dominant national banking groups in Australia. These are the Australia and New Zealand Banking Group (ANZ), Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA), National Australia Bank (NAB) and Westpac Banking Corporation (Westpac).

Trading businesses must have a local bank account for ATO tax purposes (for both payment and/or receipt of quarterly BAS payments/refunds and annual tax accounts).

Beachhead assists our clients with opening banking facilities. This includes coordinating the KYC (Know Your Customer) identification requirements which we can expedite as required. Specialist foreign exchange, fintech and other financial institutions can be engaged as required.

Grant Applications

Grants and funding programs are available from Australian federal, state & territory and local governments.   Two common business grants or tax incentives are:

  • The Research and Development Tax Incentive (R&DTI) provides a tax rebate or offset for companies conducting eligible R&D activities in Australia.
  • Export Market Development Grants (EMDG) helps Australian small to medium companies to market and promote their goods and services globally.

Beachhead can identify suitable grants and programs and assist in the application and grant writing process.
